L’HISTOIRE

Shortly after college, I lived in Yorkville on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and spent a lot of time in Central Park. The park was a place where I could find peace, especially in winter. I loved the bare trees, snowy paths, and muted colors of the winter landscape.

I painted this piece outdoors in a park in Marseille, France, drawing on those memories of New York (and based on a photo from my best friend who still lives there).

PROCESS & MATERIALS

I create each original chalk pastel painting on 100% cotton, deckled-edged, cold-pressed heavyweight art paper. My preferred chalks come from the artisanal pastelliers in Roussillon, Provence, alongside Sennelier chalk pastels, a high-quality, handcrafted range that blends and layers beautifully.

For this piece, I worked outdoors in a park in Marseille, taping the paper to a wall as I painted. Once the work was complete, I carefully removed the paper from its temporary surface.

I build up layers of pastel and use art fixative spray throughout the process, rather than only as a final finish. This creates texture and depth while preserving the expressive marks and subtle color variations that make chalk pastel such a distinctive medium.

HANDLING

Chalk pastel remains a delicate, movable medium and never fully sets like a varnished oil painting. This is part of what I love about working with pastel, but it also means original works require care when being handled. Professional framing is recommended to protect the surface.

FRAMING

Framing is included with this artwork, and I will be in touch after purchase to discuss the details. I love the process of choosing frames and mats, and will be delighted to talk through options and recommendations with you.

SHIPPING

This artwork ships from Marseille. Packaging original art is an art form in itself, and one I have been honing for years. I package each original with the same care and attention I bring to creating it.
